Our Story

On an elk hunting trip in late 2023, brothers (in-law) Matt and Ryan decided to take a massive leap of faith (what some would call ill-advised) and start the Fat Donkey Farm.

Seeking vocational renewal, and inspired by the hope of regenerative agriculture and the opportunity to restore health to themselves and the community, Matt and Ryan felt called to action.

Regenerative agriculture results in vibrant soil that produces nutrient dense and exceptional tasting food that is all but extinct from our current food system due to the industrialization of agriculture. Improved food quality directly correlates with improved human physical and mental health. Producing and buying food locally brings communities together around our most basic of needs - food. The resulting interconnectedness of nature, systems, and relationships promises a level of flourishing rarely experienced in our modern society.

Ryan’s journey required him to return to his native Fort Collins from the Northwest to join Matt, also a native to Northern Colorado.

While there were many influences, it was ultimately a ‘fat donkey’ that won the heart of Ryan and his family that etched in stone the decision to return home.
